Colorado Law is thrilled to announce our newest Professorships, along with the three recipients of the Dean’s Scholar Awards. These individuals already bring their valuable expertise, leadership, and scholarship to our faculty, and we look forward to their continued impact. Alexia Brunet Marks

Dean’s Scholar Award

Alexia Brunet Marks is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law at the University of Colorado Law School. Professor Brunet Marks is a globally recognized food law scholar who researches the connections between our prevailing food system and its effects on food safety, nutrition, agricultural labor and soil health. She teaches Food Law and Policy, Torts, International Business Transactions and International Trade Law. Her recent work on regenerative agriculture was selected for the 2025 Environmental Law and Policy Annual Review. She has published in the Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, the Harvard Journal on Regulation, and the North Carolina Law Review, and has authored several book chapters.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this prestigious research award,” said Brunet Marks. “It brings me great joy to contribute to this talented research faculty and to make meaningful impacts in the communities that I serve.”

Maryam Jamshidi

Dean’s Scholar Award

Maryam Jamshidi is an Associate Professor of Law who teaches and writes in the areas of national security law, public international law, the law of foreign relations, and tort law. In particular, her scholarship focuses on the relationship between the private sphere and national security, as well as the law of foreign relations. In exploring these dynamics, Professor Jamshidi's work draws on political and critical theory, as well as sociology. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in the Cornell Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, the Harvard National Security Journal, amongst others. She also regularly publishes in popular media outlets.

"I’m honored to be selected as a Dean’s Scholar,” Jamshidi shared. “Colorado Law has a venerable history of excellent and innovative legal scholarship. I hope to contribute to that legacy over the period of my award and beyond."

Scott Skinner-Thompson

Dean’s Scholar Award

Scott's Skinner-Thompson's research and teaching interests are in constitutional law, civil rights, and privacy law, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ and HIV issues. His current work focuses on the legal construction of gender and legal protections for transgender people, including his article, Identity by Committee, a 2024 recipient of a Dukeminier Award for best LGBTQ law review articles. His other scholarship has been published in the Georgetown Law Journal, Michigan Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, UC Davis Law Review, Yale Law Journal Forum, and Columbia Law Review Online, and he served as editor of and contributing author to AIDS and the Law (Wolters Kluwer, 5th ed., 2016; 6th ed., 2020). His shorter work has appeared in Slate, Salon, The New Republic, and elsewhere.

Skinner-Thompson shared: “I’m truly moved to receive this recognition and look forward to continuing to work with my tremendous colleagues to produce cutting-edge legal scholarship that, hopefully, improves people’s daily lives.”

Wadie Said

Nicholas Rosenbaum Professorship

Wadie Said is a professor of law whose scholarship analyzes the challenges inherent in adjudicating issues that touch on foreign policy, national security, and criminal law more broadly. His most recent work has appeared in the Wisconsin Law Review, the UCLA Law Review, and the South Carolina Law Review, among others. He is the author of Crimes of Terror (Oxford University Press 2015, paperback 2018), a comprehensive study of the modern terrorism prosecution, covering such topics as coercive interrogation, the use of informants, and the ban on providing material support to designated foreign terrorist organizations. He is currently at work on a book on the role of the Palestinian question in shaping American law, which is forthcoming from Princeton University Press. He teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, immigration law, and seminars in international human rights, counterterrorism, and advanced criminal justice.

“It is a great honor to have been awarded the Nicholas Rosenbaum Professorship, especially as its stated mission is to recognize individuals for their scholarship, and also given the many distinguished holders of this chair in the past,” Said said. “My goal is to attempt to live up to this impressive and prominent legacy by producing scholarly work commensurate with the chair’s prominence.”

Jennifer Hendricks

Henry S. and Jean Naylor Lindsley Memorial Professorship

Jennifer Hendricks joined the CU faculty in 2012, teaching family law and civil procedure. She previously taught at the University of Tennessee College of Law. Her research interests include sex equality and sex differences, constitutional family law, equality in sports, and relational feminist theory. Professor Hendricks studied mathematics and women's studies at Swarthmore College and law at Harvard University. She then practiced plaintiffs' trial and appellate litigation in Montana, where she specialized in constitutional, employment, and discrimination cases.

“I’m grateful to hold the Lindsley professorship, and I’m looking forward to asking our research librarians to help me find out about the lives of Henry and Jean Lindsley and the legacy they left to the law school,” Hendricks said. “For me, this professorship marks a shift in my research agenda from the law of pregnancy and motherhood to whether and how social/legal institutions (like families, juries, and universities) can promote democracy and serve as havens for value systems other than neoliberal selfishness.”

Margot Kaminski

Moses Lasky Professorship

Margot Kaminski's work specializes in the law of new technologies, focusing on information governance, privacy, and freedom of expression. Recently, her work has focused on AI Law; she is currently drafting a leading co-authored casebook in the field. In 2018, Professor Kaminski conducted research on comparative data privacy law as a recipient of the Fulbright-Schuman Innovation Grant. In 2024, she conducted research on comparative AI Law at the European University Institute (EUI) as a Fernand Braudel Senior Fellow and recipient of a 2024 Fulbright-Schuman Grant. She is a 2024-25 Faculty Associate of the Berkman Klein Center at Harvard University and an Affiliated Fellow at the Information Society Project at Yale Law School.

"It's a true honor to be awarded the Moses Lasky Professorship, and a responsibility I don't take lightly,” Kaminski said. “Lasky was one of our most distinguished alumni, who combined high intellectual achievement with a dedication to civic involvement and public service. I understand and value this legacy, and am grateful for the recognition and support for my ongoing work."

Harry Surden

Hatfield Professorship

Harry Surden’s research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and law. Recognized as a leading scholar in this field, Professor Surden is known for originating the concept of "computable contracts" and for his widely-cited articles on topics such as AI Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, AI ethics and loyalty, computable law, machine learning and law, autonomous systems, as well as related work on patent law, copyright law, and information privacy law.

“I’m honored to be named the Hatfield Professor of Law,” Surden said. “This recognition is especially meaningful as it echoes the incredible career of Dale Hatfield, a pioneer in telecommunications and technology policy, and also supports my own ongoing research at the intersection of law, technology, and public policy."

Professor Ann England has been a driving force in Colorado’s legal community for nearly two decades, championing the wrongfully convicted, training the next generation of lawyers and providing pro bono defense for those most in need. This year, her extraordinary service has been recognized with the University of Colorado’s Chase Faculty Community Service Award.

"I am deeply honored to receive the Chase Faculty Community Service Award, but this recognition truly belongs to the incredible students, colleagues, and community partners I’ve had the privilege to work alongside," England said. "Together, we’ve fought to free the wrongfully convicted, improve fairness in our courts, and train the next generation of lawyers committed to justice. I am grateful to CU, to my students, the KWIP staff and to the communities we serve for reminding me every day why this work matters."

England, the Schaden Chair for Experiential Learning and Clinical Law Professor at Colorado Law, directs the school’s Criminal Defense Clinic. Her leadership and service extend far beyond campus, where her volunteer work has inspired colleagues, students, judges and attorneys across the state and nation.

In 2015, England founded the Korey Wise Innocence Project (KWIP) at Colorado Law, thanks to a generous gift from Central Park Five exoneree Korey Wise. What began as years of reviewing handwritten letters from prisoners has become a nationally recognized program staffed with full-time attorneys, student advocates and policy leaders.

KWIP provides free legal and investigative services for incarcerated Coloradans with credible innocence claims, develops policy reform initiatives and delivers curricula on wrongful convictions to high school students. England continues to volunteer her time to the project, declining compensation for her role as faculty director.

Strengthening death penalty defense

England also co-leads the National College of Capital Voir Dire, a nonprofit that trains death penalty defense attorneys in effective jury selection. She organizes and hosts an annual three-day conference at ̽��Ƶ, bringing in about 100 lawyers to learn the “Colorado Method” – a nationally recognized standard for capital jury selection. Her work has helped strengthen capital defense nationwide and contributed to the significant decline in death sentences over the last decade.

England’s service began long before she joined CU’s faculty, working nearly a decade as a public defender. She continues to represent indigent clients – including those experiencing homelessness – during summers when students are away. Colleagues describe her taking on dozens of cases each week with hardly any support, motivated purely by her commitment to justice.

She also has provided critical training and technical assistance to attorneys in municipal courts, elevating the quality of representation for low-income Coloradans. Judges and attorneys alike have praised her as an invaluable resource in efforts to improve fairness in local courts.

Beyond the courtroom

England’s community service reaches far beyond the legal system. She serves on the board of ACLU Colorado, coaches high school mock trial teams, and even lends her creativity as a designer to the Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center, crafting couture dresses from condoms for the nonprofit’s fundraising events.

Her students, many of whom now serve as public defenders and advocates, describe her as a mentor whose influence has shaped not just their careers but their sense of civic responsibility.

In recognizing England, the selection committee highlighted the breadth and depth of her contributions, from exonerations and policy reforms to mentorship and grassroots advocacy. She will be honored Monday at a reception at ̽��Ƶ.

“Professor Ann England’s unwavering commitment to justice and tireless advocacy for the wrongfully convicted have transformed Colorado’s legal landscape, making her so deserving of the Chase Faculty Community Service Award,” said Joe Coleman, JPMorgan Chase business banking market manager. “Through founding the Korey Wise Innocence Project and leading national efforts in death penalty defense, she has inspired generations of lawyers and elevated the quality of representation for those most in need. JPMorgan Chase is proud to sponsor this award, celebrating extraordinary service and leadership that strengthens our communities and advances the cause of justice.”

The Chase Faculty Community Service Award – established in 1991 with a $100,000 donation – is funded annually by an endowment from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation through the CU Foundation. The endowment provides an annual award of $10,000 to a full-time faculty member at the University of Colorado who has rendered exceptional service in his or her community.

This August, Colorado Law was thrilled to welcome four new staff: three to the Korey Wise Innocence Project (KWIP), and one to the Immigration Law Clinic. Both KWIP and the clinical education program provide invaluable pro bono legal services to those in our community, with KWIP working to exonerate the wrongfully convicted in Colorado. Our new staff will further our pursuit to achieve justice for our clients, and we are incredibly grateful for the resources that have allowed us to expand these programs to continue serving individuals who could not otherwise hire an attorney.

Ann England, Director

Ann England is the Director of the Korey Wise Innocence Project (KWIP) at the University of Colorado School of Law. She was the founder of the KWIP, which now has six other attorneys, a paralegal and a communications director and works on advocacy, education, and litigation for innocent individuals in Colorado prisons.

England previously taught in the Criminal Defense Clinic at Colorado Law, where she worked as a Clinical Professor of Law since 2005. She also regularly teaches Poverty Law, Wrongful Convictions, Jury Selection, Comparative Criminal and Juvenile Law, and Trial Advocacy courses. Before she became the Director of KWIP, England was the Schaden Chair for Experiential Learning and an Elizabeth Cook Distinguished Faculty Fellow. Yearly, she coordinates a nationally recognized training for capital defense attorneys in voir dire. She is an active board member of the Colorado ALCU and a prior board member of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar.

Prior to becoming a clinical law professor, England worked as a trial attorney at the Federal Public Defender's Office in Colorado and the Colorado State Public Defender's Office. At the Colorado State Public Defender's Office, she worked in Arapahoe, Adams, Weld, Logan, and Denver Counties as a Deputy State Public Defender. She later became a division lead at the Colorado State Public Defender's Office in Denver. England received her J.D. from the University of Denver, in 1995, Sturm College of Law; B.A. from the University of Michigan, in 1990.

We have an exceptional team, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the pursuit of justice.”

Jessica Bernfeld, Staff Attorney

Jessica Bernfeld joined KWIP as a staff attorney in August 2025. Prior to joining KWIP, she practiced criminal defense in Colorado, first as a trial attorney in the Arapahoe office of the Colorado State Public Defender and then in solo practice where she primarily represented youth charged as adults for serious felonies. Jessica received her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, an M.Phil from the School of Social Sciences at Cardiff University, and her B.A. from Wellesley College.

“I’m honored to join the incredible staff at the Korey Wise Innocence Project and excited to connect with students and the broader Colorado Law community,” Bernfeld said. “I’ve long admired KWIP’s zealous legal advocacy and work on legislative reforms, and I look forward to being part of the effort to exonerate people wrongfully convicted in Colorado.”

Shalifa Cambrelen-Hogan, Project Legal Assistant, Paralegal

Shalifa Cambrelen-Hogan joins the KWIP team as Project Legal Assistant/Paralegal and brings vast experience in professional operations, with a proven track record of supporting senior leaders and streamlining organizational processes across the energy, legal, and corporate sectors. Her career includes serving as Director of Legal Operations with the Democratic National Convention Committee’s legal team, supporting attorneys in law firm environments, and partnering with in-house counsel to manage compliance, contract, and organizational risk. She has worked extensively in executive support, IT asset management, and corporate operations. She has also developed a strong foundation in project coordination, stakeholder management, and process optimization.

“I am thrilled to bring my organizational expertise, problem-solving mindset, and passion for collaboration to the KWIP team,” Cambrelen-Hogan said. “It is truly an honor to be a part of a team that is changing lives and restoring justice for those who have been wrongfully incarcerated. In my eyes, KWIP is more than an organization - it's a force for good, for justice and for hope. I'm excited to help make a difference in the lives of those who deserve to be seen, heard, and brought home. I look forward to contributing to KWIP’s mission and continued success.”

Katie Glynn, Staff Attorney, Immigration Clinic

Katie Glynn joined Colorado Law’s Immigration Clinic as a Staff Attorney in August of 2025. Glynn has worked as a Senior Associate Attorney with Grob & Eirich, LLC since February of 2015. Her practice includes immigration law and the representation of immigrant children and their caregivers in Colorado state guardianship, custody, and adoption proceedings. Her areas of expertise include: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, removal (deportation) defense of unaccompanied children, children’s asylum claims, and the intersection of immigration law and adoption.

Prior to joining Grob & Eirich, LLC, Glynn worked for the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network (RMIAN) as an Equal Justice Works Fellow. She continues to support RMIAN as a pro bono lawyer and mentor to other pro bono lawyers. Glynn is a 2005 graduate of the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and a 1995 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. In 2022-23, Katie taught Legal Writing and to co-taught Refugee and Asylum Law as an Adjunct Faculty member at Colorado Law.

The University of Colorado Law School mourns the loss of Professor Arthur Hopkins Travers II, a beloved teacher, scholar, and colleague who shaped generations of Colorado Law students. Professor Travers—known to many as Art—passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025, just two days after his 89th birthday.

Professor Travers joined the Colorado Law faculty in 1970 after teaching at the University of Kansas and practicing law in Chicago. For more than three decades, he taught courses in copyright, commercial, and antitrust law. He also served as Acting Dean of the law school for one year during a time of transition, and in 1998 was honored as the inaugural recipient of the Clifford J. Calhoun Public Service Award, recognizing his commitment to service in the legal profession and community. Known for his clarity of thought and deep care for his students, he left an indelible mark on Colorado’s legal community.

During his tenure at Colorado Law, Professor Travers was admired not only for his scholarship but also for the humanity he brought to the study of law. His colleagues remember him as a friend to many, someone who embodied decency, thoughtfulness, and kindness.

Retired Colorado Law faculty member Mark Loewenstein reflected, “Art was incredibly smart and had a prodigious memory, which he drew upon even in his final days.”

Professor Emeritus, J. Dennis Hynes recalled, “Art was a wonderful friend. He was always a positive influence in faculty meetings and gatherings in the law school, treating colleagues with respect. He was reliable and punctual and was always positive and thoughtful with colleagues, students, and staff. He had a powerful intellect but never displayed arrogance or condescension. He was a remarkable human being.”

Beyond the classroom, Professor Travers enriched the intellectual life of the law school with his wide-ranging interests. He took a sabbatical year in London to study the English legal system, an experience that deepened his perspective and informed his teaching. His contributions to the field of business law were also reflected in his service to the broader profession, including chairing the Commercial Law Division of the Colorado Bar Association and co-chairing its committee on Revised Article 9 of the UCC, helping to shape its enactment in Colorado. His professional career was marked by a strong sense of integrity and a commitment to preparing students not just to practice law, but to approach it with fairness and compassion.

Dean Lolita Buckner Inniss shared, “Professor Travers was a pillar of our law school for more than three decades. We are profoundly grateful for his life and work, and he will be deeply missed.”

Professor Travers’s life outside of the law school was equally full. He was a voracious reader with a personal library numbering in the thousands of volumes, a devoted baseball fan—especially of the Chicago Cubs—a lover of music from classical to Billy Idol, and an avid cook who delighted in preparing meals for family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie Travers; his daughters, Constance Travers (Richard McDonald) of Boulder and Anne Travers (David Purdy) of Louisville; and his seven grandchildren, as well as extended family who loved him dearly.

Professor Travers’s legacy at Colorado Law endures in the many students he taught, mentored, and inspired over the course of his long career. We are grateful for his decades of service, his scholarship, and the profound example he set as a teacher and colleague. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.
