Jazz ensembles

Currently, our jazz program enrollment is at full capacity; unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate non-jazz majors in our combos and big bands at this time.

If you are interested in our Vocal Jazz Ensemble (and are not a jazz major) please contact Vocal Jazz Ensemble Director Jocelyn Medina at jocelyn.medina@colorado.edu.

We are offering a section for non-jazz majors; interested students should register for:

Tuesdays only, 5:15-6:45 p.m.,Imig Music Building, E160

This will be a non-performing “lab” class where non-majors can work on improvisation, jazz theory, style, reading and repertoire. No auditions are necessary. Students should have a good foundation on their instrument (playing in high school for example) and be able to read music.Please be aware that there is a limitation on number of students and instrumentation as we try to have balanced ensembles.

Information for jazz majors

We will not be holding ensemble auditions. You will be placed in a big band and combo.

Combos

Everyone should enroll in a combo (Thursdays, 5:15-6:45 p.m.).

We have two big bands. The Concert Jazz Ensemble focusing on important repertoire and the Thompson Latin Jazz Ensemble.Big bands rehearse every tuesday and thursday 3:30-5pm in Imig E160 and S134. Haalfway through the semester, you'll switch.

All horn players should enroll in big band, as well asdrums, bass, piano and guitar. Thompson Jazz Studies Program Director John Guntherwill let you know if you are in a big band this fall.
