The senior essay is no longer required; students wishing to complete a senior essay or senior project will work independently with a faculty member. The honors thesis will require ITAL 4980 and one course that focuses on literary or cultural theories/theory related to the thesis, including but not limited toÌýFREN 3200; ENGL 2026 Popular Culture, Critical Reading; ENGL 2036 Introduction to Media Studies in the Humanities; ENGL 2112 Introduction to Literary Theory. Students should consult with their honors thesis advisor when choosing a course.

Map - ITAL requirements

Students majoring in Italian are required to have an initial advising session with the departmental advisor and to meet with the advisor at each semester's registration. Students majoring in Italian must earn a grade of C- or higher in ALL courses required for the major and may NOT take major requirement courses Pass/Fail. Twelve hours of upper division ITAL credit must be completed on the CU-Boulder campus.

ÌýCredits earned in Education Abroad programs may be applied to the Italian major as follows:

  • Credits earned through a University of Colorado program in Italy may be applied to the Italian major. Students majoring in Italian must meet with the Italian advisor before going on an Education Abroad program to Italy to discuss their course of study and how courses will satisfy major requirements.
  • Credits earned through other Education Abroad programs will be evaluated by the Italian advisor for application to the Italian major. Students may apply a maximum of 18 transfer credit hours to the Italian major -- only 15 hours can be applied at the upper division level. Students majoring in Italian must meet with an advisor prior to attending an Education Abroad program with an institution other than CU.
  • Courses taken in all Education Abroad programs must be completed with a grade of C- or better in order to apply to the Italian major.

Double Major

All requirements described above must be fulfilled in the event that a student wishes to use Italian as part of the double major.
